The council want to kill the squirrels in our local park?
apparently some womans dog attacked one, and when she picked it up the squirrel bit her. now they are calling for a squirrel cull and are asking for folks not to feed them. what can me and my kids do to try and stop this. ???The council want to kill the squirrels in our local park?
This is just another example of how an animal gets blamed for a person's stupidity. It's like when a dog bites someone the dog gets punished or put down regardless of the situation, or how it was brought up or bred- by irresponsible morons. The squirrel was a wild animal, if it was being attacked, and then picked up- of course it was going to bite!!
I doubt highly if a squirrel would normally run down from the tree and attack just out of viciousness- they are prey animals, not the predator. they eat nuts, not people!
At a local woods near where I live squirrels have been encouraged to become tame, and crawl up your leg to take nuts from you. Noone has ever been bitten and children are fine with them.
Start a petition- immediately, and encourage people to write their own letters as well- councils can be sly- a local petition where I lived contained hundreds of signatures, but it was published as being only 1 opposition because it was sent as part of a letter, which was from just one person at the head of the campaign.
I wonder what the RSPCA, and other animal welfare organisations have to say about this? I can't imagine them supporting it. The locals might be getting away with being ignorant at the moment, but once someone knowledgeable, or a big organisation like the RSPCA are onto it, then the hysteria should subside.The council want to kill the squirrels in our local park?

Why do you want to protect an invasive, destructive, disease festering, non-native animal? Wouldn't you prefer to see your native red squirrels make a comeback?

and squirrels DO NOT carry rabies... there is a 1/2 inch gap between the squirrels front teeth and their back molars... which makes it impossible for them to transmit saliva.

Have you actually contacted the council personally about this for their point of view? Contact your local paper also, they might take up the issue. You could always have a 'sit in' at the park!

hit the break but kept sliding,and be darned if a rabbit wasnt next I swerved again,only this time I couldnt control the truck and rolled over into the terrain below.By this time Im inside my truck I couldnt open the door so I had to crawl out the window, I rolled on down the hill again,Guess what was down there when I got down there?The rabbit and its whole family Im guessing..There was also a message attached I think,When I rolled down I should have crashed,Guess what.I landed on a small tree that held that car from hitting the bottom.So a skunk and a rabbit was saved and me.How weird is that.

'Pet' flying squirrel problem,?
We raised a litter of orphaned flying squirrels to maturity, let them outside,built nest boxes in a tree in the yard then and then every chance they got back in the house they came! The main trouble is that they sneaking inside and chewing everything up they find. Don,t tell me to ';close the doors and windows'; I already do that and it seems they have a pact with the devil to get inside again.'Pet' flying squirrel problem,?

Why would a person want to keep something like this caged up in the first place. Best to get them acustomed to you and keep them outside where you can keep track of all their antics from a safe distance (for both of you).
It's true, people have kept squirrels, skunks. racoons and other such rodents, even deer and larger animals as pets and it has worked out OK to a point. The problem, is that it can be such an unpredicatable situation. A wild animal is a wild animal and that's what they are, you can't change their basic instincts, which is where many of the problems develope as these animals age.
Several things can happen that can turn a cute, cudly, furry handful into a very dangerous hazzard. For one thing, It's not good to keep a pet caged up all the time, they just turn into an angry protective hostile beast that is no joy to have around. Yet if left to come and go as they wish, wild animals often turn territorial, and begin to compete for space within a hibitat (your house). They can be very destructive within a house while carving nitches for themselves. Then there is mating season. They can become unpredictable and very temprimental turning on the hand that feeds them in an instant. Can you imagine your kid being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Best leave wild animals to themselves, buy feeders and salt licks and let it go at that.
There are so many good pets that if bought from the right sources make excellent pets for kids. When my son was very young, I bought him a Chinchilla from a chinchilla ranch that we saw at a wild life show. He and this Chinchilla became the best of friends, talk about a cute, cuddly furball? lively personality loved playing games and love being handled and cuddled. This one lived 10 years and was replaced with another one that is still going strong at about 18 years. Not only Chinchillas but there are many types of domesticated animals that make excellent pets.

Dazed Flying Squirrel... HELP!?
Ok this is the thing my Brother works in the woods which I don't agree with but anyway he came over today and handed me a box with some gloves and was going to leave I was like hold up nooo way what is it this time, he said they cut a tree and the lil Squirrels hit the ground and was stunned and looked hurt, there were 4 of them and so he brought me one to take care of, other than looking a lil dazed it seems ok, but now what? I gave it a bed a water bottle and some bird seed, some mealworms and hamster food. He looks so scared do you think he will live and do you think he will ever tame down after being in the wild? I think it was born last year it's not full grown yet but it's not a baby!Dazed Flying Squirrel... HELP!?
If he does not appear to be injured, just keep him comfy in the box and keep feeding him. If you can, get a large cage that you would use for a hamster or something like that, and be sure it has a wheel so he can exercise.Dazed Flying Squirrel... HELP!?

Your lil' critter should be fine, if its moving about, and has not suffered internal damage by the fall. Best thing to do is to keep fresh water available to it, and also alow it plenty of time to get used to it's surroundings. Keep it in a warm, quiet place, and if its ok by tommarow moring, best thing is to let it go. If its not a baby and can fend for its self it will do just fine. Also try offering it some corn, kernals if you have them. Its likly to like it.

1.) It contains bitter flavoring that is designed to deter animals other than rats and mice from eating it; the squirrels would likely eat the outer peanut butter coating and leave the poison part.
2.) It is illegal (and very unkind) to place rat poison in open places where other creatures, such as birds, have access to it. If they are extremely hungry, they might eat it and be poisoned.

Place these little balls off the ground and in the internodes of the tree branches, the squirrels will enjoy their last meal, go back to their nest, go to sleep and no longer bea problem.
Or eliminate the food source that brings the varmits in and they will quit coming to visit.
drop a trail of popcorn and peanuts for about 3 miles away from your home. Follow the squirrels, as they pick up the treats replace the trail with cayenne pepper. This will deter them from returning. hopefully.

I would give it to your local Wildlife center, the major is raising and then releasing wild animals. It will still get to live, but they will make sure it is healthy and doesn't have rabies.
(i beleive that you could raise it, but it will be harder for it to live in the wild again.)

Vocal squirrel?
Yesterday I was walking the dog in woods and picking sloes when I heard loud ';Churr, Churr, Churr'; noises. Not recognising the sound, I looked up expecting to see a bird and saw a squirrel making threatening movements with a lot of tail-flicking and a real lot of noise! I see squirrels often, but don't remember hearing one make a noise before. Is this unusual? was I picking his sloes?

Should I worry about the squirrels?

What to do about keeping squirrels from digging up newly planted bulbs?
Try planting %26amp; sprinkling hot pepper seeds around the bulbs, lots of seeds! Virtually all animals hate this - squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, raccoons, etc. Once they get a sniff they're outta there!

I always cover my newly planted bulbs with the black plastic mesh any home improvement store sells for gutter cover. It comes in rolls of 20 feet or so and is pretty cheap. After planting the bulbs, I cut the mesh to fit the planting and then secure it with landscaping pins....then in the spring, right when the bulbs are sprouting, remove the pins and mesh. both products can be reused later for the same purpose. If you can find castor oil at the drug store, mix a cup of it with a gallon of water and a squirt of liquid soap. Then spray the area with it. I have seen really good results with this. Pet Squirrel Help!????????
I have a squirrel which I have rescued, and is now caring for it. Am I doing this right?
I cleaned him (gave him a bath).
I have had him for 2 days now, (he is a baby) and all I feed him is milk.
I keep him warm, and by the looks of it he looks quite comfortable.
He urinates and poops normally.
Anything else I should know, and anything else I should do?Pet Squirrel Help!????????
How old is he? Are his eyes open, and does he have hair? If his eyes arent open then he cant go to the bathroom by himself. You have to take a warm wash cloth and rub his belly after every feeding. And do NOT give him milk! Cows milk will kill him. You should take him to a wildlife rehabilitation center asap. Squirrels do not make good pets. I have been rehabilitating squirrels for years. When they hit sexual maturity, they turn very aggressive. They will pick one person, and literally attack anyone else. At times the will attack their chosen person too, and it is not fun to be attacked by a squirrel. They are very cute and friendly when they are young, and it is very hard to not keep them. But they live 10 years in captivity. You will never be able to go anywhere when you own a squirrel, because no one else can take care of it while your away (as it will attack).
Please think of the squirrel, and not just that you want a cute pet. If you want a pet squirrel, adopt a domesticated flying squirrel or sugar glider.
If you are insistent on keeping him then theres nothing I can do. To feed him you need Esbilac Puppy Milk Replacer (no other brand). http://www.thesquirrelboard.com/baby_squ鈥?/a>

Dont give him a bath, as he will get too cold and get sick. Also, do you have an exotics veterinarian willing to take care of him? It is very difficult to find a veterinarian who is willing to treat a squirrel. And in most states, it is illegal to have a squirrel. If they catch you with it, you will be fined and he will be killed. They do carry mites, and often mange. If you see them on him, you have to take him to a vet to get medication. Some mites can be transfered to your pets, and you. To avoid this, take him to a wildlife center where they can medicate him, care for him properly, and release him so he can live out his natural life.
Please dont be selfish. Take him to a Wildlife Center.
Edit: The First Dragon--%26gt; Dont feed him solid foods until he is at least 8 weeks old. When he gets old enough, you start him off with alvocado and peeled grapes (they will choke on peeling), as it is soft. Their diet in captivity includes about 40% vegetables, 10% fruit, and 50% rodent blocks.
It is a tragedy waiting to happen if you release him and hes not scared of humans. When they go up to people or pets, they could be killed, not everyone is animal friendly. When squirrels go up to people, they assume they are rabit. Animal Control will go on a mass killing spree. That is not a LOL situation.Pet Squirrel Help!????????
If he has fur and his eyes open, you can start offering him solid foods. His main diet will be grains and seeds and nuts, but he will like other natural foods also.
If he is still nursing, I hope you are giving him a proper rodent mild replacement.
He is a wild animal and will probably want to be released eventually; if you keep him, he will need a really big cage and things to climb on.
\If you keep him inside before releasing him, you have to let him climb some tree branches that you bring in. There have to be branches that are too weak to hold his weight, so he learns that thin branches can't hold him and he shouldn't depend on them. This is important for a squirrel to know.
Watch out where you release him, if you do. A friend of mine raised a baby squirrel, and then released him in a city park. They went to visit him. He would get up on their shoulder and they would give him something to eat. At the park he did this with other people too, which they enjoyed. But then the other squirrels started copying him and going on people's shoulders to get food, but they didn't know the proper procedure. They didn't know that you should be nice to people. They ended up biting people and causing trouble. LOL.
You really should get it to a wildlife rehaber. They have the experience and knowledge to raise an orphaned animal.

I guess you can use it with squirrel as well. I do normally take all the meat off the bone but you cant exactly do that with squirrel. I guess you can but it will be stuff. Well anyways you should really using hones but make sure you put a lot of what ever spice you use or it will taste too much like hones. let me know how it goes if you care to.

I really like them boiled in salt and water then roasted in butter, garlic, pepper, and onions. It'll make you slap your ears with your tongue. I found a baby squirrel in our flowerpot.Mom didn't come back for him so I cared for him.Got him warm,hydrated, and started the feeding. I bought the recomended formula.I had him for 10 days %26amp; he was thriving well.Then I noticed his little nose started to bleed, and he didn't want to eat.How could he be perfectly fine one day, and then not the next? His Mom didn't come back for him becasue she knew he was sick. She left him to die, because animals don't take care of sick ones. Caring for a sick baby would waste their food and water supplies.
Unfortunately, this is the way it is in the animal world. It is called Survival of the Fittest, meaning that those animals that are weak or sick are left to die (or be eaten by a predator) so that the stronger ones can live to make more strong babies.
Little animals like this are not smart enough to have compassion, which is what YOU have when you tried to care for this animal. Compassion is one of the things that sets men apart from other animals. It IS a good thing to have, but it can be mis-applied.
Animals have a ';sixth sense'; about knowing when a baby is sick, and while it seems cruel, they will leave the baby behind to die, in order that there is more food and water left for the healthy babies.

BTW: Bleeding from the nose could indicate either a brain problem, or pneumonia. There is no way to tell, and it would cost too much to have the vet run tests.
It is very likely the squirrel has come in contact with one of many virus or bacteria or fungus that surround humans. We are used to these and for the most part they bother us very little. However, they maybe deadly to animals that do not associate with humans.
This is a tough way to learn that you should not be trying to save critters. For the most part Nature takes care of it's own. Usually when humans interfere, the results are not desirable. Millions of little wild animal die every year in the care of well meaning people. It is really best just to leave the critters alone.
Leave the wild to the wild.
For those that think you can take a wild animal to a vet. Sorry no. You see there are rules prohibiting veterinarians from treating wild animals. Rehabbers more than likely wont help either. There are just too many baby squirrels and not enough people to watch out for them.
Edit: I see one of you is following me around just to give me a negative point. Well, you are wasting your time and behaving rather foolishly. If you cant take advise from a real wildlife biologist you are just plain lost.
It sounds as though it could have been pneumonia. If he lasted 10 days, the mother didn't likely leave it on purpose due to it being sickly. Squirrels have very sensitive digestive systems (never feed them peanuts, for example). I'm not sure if the formula was the best thing or not (really don't know). It sounds like you did your very best. You should be proud of yourself for trying so hard.

His Mom didn't come back for him becasue she knew he was sick. She left him to die, because animals don't take care of sick ones. Caring for a sick baby would waste their food and water supplies.
Unfortunately, this is the way it is in the animal world. It is called Survival of the Fittest, meaning that those animals that are weak or sick are left to die (or be eaten by a predator) so that the stronger ones can live to make more strong babies.
Little animals like this are not smart enough to have compassion, which is what YOU have when you tried to care for this animal. Compassion is one of the things that sets men apart from other animals. It IS a good thing to have, but it can be mis-applied.
Animals have a ';sixth sense'; about knowing when a baby is sick, and while it seems cruel, they will leave the baby behind to die, in order that there is more food and water left for the healthy babies.

BTW: Bleeding from the nose could indicate either a brain problem, or pneumonia. There is no way to tell, and it would cost too much to have the vet run tests.
It is very likely the squirrel has come in contact with one of many virus or bacteria or fungus that surround humans. We are used to these and for the most part they bother us very little. However, they maybe deadly to animals that do not associate with humans.
This is a tough way to learn that you should not be trying to save critters. For the most part Nature takes care of it's own. Usually when humans interfere, the results are not desirable. Millions of little wild animal die every year in the care of well meaning people. It is really best just to leave the critters alone.
Leave the wild to the wild.
For those that think you can take a wild animal to a vet. Sorry no. You see there are rules prohibiting veterinarians from treating wild animals. Rehabbers more than likely wont help either. There are just too many baby squirrels and not enough people to watch out for them.
Edit: I see one of you is following me around just to give me a negative point. Well, you are wasting your time and behaving rather foolishly. If you cant take advise from a real wildlife biologist you are just plain lost.
It sounds as though it could have been pneumonia. If he lasted 10 days, the mother didn't likely leave it on purpose due to it being sickly. Squirrels have very sensitive digestive systems (never feed them peanuts, for example). I'm not sure if the formula was the best thing or not (really don't know). It sounds like you did your very best. You should be proud of yourself for trying so hard.
Follow the precautions and advices of vet doctor.

Well I don't know if this is bonding but sometimes when I'm really lazy I will put my trash outside my back door. One little day, I put it out and then about 5 minutes later put another bag out and there was a hole in the bag. Well I thought it was rather quick but I continued to clean and kind of ignore but it was in the back of my mind that I'd better that trash out soon so I got my shoes on and opened the door and there was this squirrel digging like I had the best trash in the neighborhood. He ran and he kind of went over this beam and then sat on this fence and watched me. He knew that he wanted more and I'm sure that I was being called bad names. I was okay with that though because I do have good trash.

i'll help , rabbits and squirrles will not cross a sharp , edgey barbed wire fence , you can string aluminum cans and join them with wooden sticks so wen the wind breezez against the cans they make a loud clashing noise that will scare the little rodents , there are wooden owls with scary gleaming eyes , some even make owl noises to scare the rodenst , toy snakes which are a threat to little rodents , or a alarm that goes of when the rodents try to cross over to your yard , which will scare them , scare croes are old fashined and are not the best thing to use , but i suggest a fence that a squirrel cant come up or squeze under or a fence which a rabbit can't hope over , or sound efects , noises scare little rodents like bunny's and squirrels most effective way to keep any pests away is the ultrasonic repellers that run off a battery. I have protected garden bedding plants with deer netting. This approach should work for strawberries also since they do not get too tall. Deer Netting is a 3/4 inch mesh, black plastic netting that comes in 7 ft wide by 100 ft long rolls and is reasonably priced. I build a simple wood structure of 1'' by 2'' lumber to hold it up and fasten it to the ground with garden or landscape fabric staples. he's not bored. he's scared and lonely and probably needs proper nutrition. if you fail to do anything, you will probably be responsible for it's death.

3) DO NOT FEED the baby squirrels anything, especially cows milk.
