I'm planting English bluebell bulbs. How do I protect them from the squirrels?

I'm spacing them four inches apart and planting them four inches deep. I've immersed them in sulfur powder because I was told that would help keep the squirrels away. This will be the third time we've tried to plant English bluebell bulbs -- the first two times they never came up in the spring. What else can I do to ensure the survival of my English bluebells. They're a gift for my mother; I really want them to survive and flourish.I'm planting English bluebell bulbs. How do I protect them from the squirrels?
this may help you,if you put very fine mesh wire around each bulb as you plant them, the squirrels teeth would find this hopefully too difficult to penetrate and try and find an easier food source, therefore spread some bird nuts and apple pieces in a near but different area,GLI'm planting English bluebell bulbs. You can put down a wide piece of screen or hardware cloth, with something to weight it down, for a week or so - then take it up. The soil will have settled and the squirrels will have forgotten you planted anything there by then (squirrels really don't have good memories). Additionally or alternatively, you can sprinkle hot pepper, the hottest you can get, over the area where you planted.
Make sure you are planting them with the correct end up and in appropriate soil, sunlight and moisture conditions.

As for squirrels...get some squirrel food and put it out at the opposite end of the yard to distract them.
I've found that planting a few moth balls with bulbs discourages a dog from digging up bulbs.

Perhaps it would work with squirrels, too?
