I recently got into an argument with a friend over whether or not squirrels hibernate.
Please help me to settle this debate - hopefully with me as the victor!
Do they or don't they?
Thanks in advance!Do squirrels hibernate in the winter?
The two species of squirrel found the UK (red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris and grey squirrel Sciurus carolinensis) do not hibernate. during milder winter days both species will be fairly active just after dawn and they usually return to their dreys by mid-morning. On very cold or wet days, they tend not to leave the drey as they would expend too much energy to make it worthwhile foraging.Do squirrels hibernate in the winter?
yes they do
american squirel hibernate but it depend wher they are locateed
Nope! Squirrels remain active all year 'round. You don't see them as often in the winter because they're holed up in their dens to conserve body heat, but they don't hibernate.
British reds do. Most Greys don't.
The reds cannot hibernate straight through, they wake to use food stored in the drey or burried food occassionally
The answer is no, but a lot of people think that they do by sleeping in holes in trees :S:S.. which is prety stupid..
They just sleep for longer but dont hibernate
Hope this helped :)
